The animated movie Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has tied with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen sequel to open at number one on the U.S. box office chart on July 3, 2009 (Independence Day weekend). The third installment of the Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs franchise was already making waves upon its release on July 1, 2009 (Wednesday), it broke the record for the biggest opening day gross for an animated movie with $13.8million.
Ice Age’s popularity continued as people took advantage of the three-day holiday weekend, that took Ice Age 3 to number one alongside last week’s (June 28, 2009) chart-topper Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with $42.5 million).
Johnny Depp’s took the top three with his gangster movie that grossed $26.2 million.
